There’s a kind of grief that doesn’t just break your heart—it rearranges your entire life.
When I lost a family member, it wasn’t only the absence that hurt. It was how everything I thought was steady suddenly wasn’t. The routines we followed, the roles we quietly held, the little certainties I never questioned—they all shifted overnight. It felt like waking up in a life that looked familiar, but no longer felt the same.
Grief, I realized, isn’t just about missing someone. It’s about learning how to live in a world that has been subtly, and sometimes painfully, restructured.
I found myself trying to put things back the way they were, holding on to old rhythms as if they could bring a sense of normalcy. But some spaces can’t be filled the same way again. Some roles change. Some silences stay. And that’s the part no one really prepares you for—the quiet re-arranging of everything you once depended on.
Moving forward didn’t mean fixing what was broken. It meant accepting that things had changed, and allowing myself to slowly rebuild around that truth.
There were days when even the smallest tasks felt heavier, because they carried the weight of “this used to be different.” But little by little, I started creating new patterns. Not replacements, but adaptations. A new kind of steady—not as rigid as before, but more honest.
I still carry them with me—in the way I think, in the decisions I make, in the pauses I take when I remember. Their absence reshaped my world, yes, but it also reshaped me.
And maybe that’s what moving on really looks like.
Not returning to the life we had before, but learning to stand in the one that remains—even if the ground beneath it has shifted.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from exploring cafés and food spots around Metro Manila, it’s that Maginhawa never runs out of surprises. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, a new gem quietly invites you in — with the aroma of comfort food and the promise of good conversations. One such place is Hot Off The Press Café, a cozy nook that truly lives up to its name — offering freshly made dishes, warm hospitality, and that homey charm that instantly makes you feel at ease.
First Impressions: A Café with Character
Tucked along Maginhawa Street in Quezon City, Hot Off The Press immediately catches your attention with its inviting setup — simple, stylish, and effortlessly relaxing. It’s the kind of café where you can sit back, enjoy a hearty meal, and just let the world slow down for a while.
When we visited for another Kapihan episode for JLofied, we knew right away that this was going to be one of those memorable finds. The space felt comfortable and welcoming — not too busy, not too quiet — just the perfect spot to unwind, whether you’re dining solo, catching up with friends, or enjoying a family lunch.
What We Ordered: Comfort Food, Served Fresh
Now, let’s talk about the food — because this is where Hot Off The Press truly stands out.
We started with their pork ribs, which were tender, flavorful, and fall-off-the-bone good. The smoky, savory glaze was perfectly balanced — not too sweet, not too salty — just the right kind of comfort food that instantly hits the spot.
Next up was the ham and cheese panini — crisp on the outside, soft and melty on the inside. It’s a classic done right, with generous filling and that satisfying crunch that makes every bite so worth it.
To add something light and refreshing, we had the fresh garden salad, a vibrant mix of greens and veggies with just the right tangy dressing to balance the meal.
But the real highlight? Their unlimited soup! Yes, you read that right — unli soup! It’s flavorful, comforting, and served hot — perfect for rainy afternoons or when you simply want that “sarap ng bahay” warmth in a bowl. For its price point, it’s such a sulit treat that adds extra charm to your dining experience.
The Ambiance: Warm, Cozy, and Perfect for Any Mood
What makes Hot Off The Press special is its simple yet inviting atmosphere. The interiors are cozy and laid-back — not intimidating at all. It’s the kind of space that makes you want to linger a bit longer, maybe order another drink, and just enjoy the moment.
Whether you’re here for a casual brunch, an afternoon coffee date, or a chill dinner with loved ones, the ambiance fits perfectly. It’s spacious enough to feel comfortable, yet intimate enough to make your meal feel special.
Final Thoughts: Definitely Worth a Spot on Your Maginhawa Food Crawl
Hot Off The Press isn’t just about food — it’s about comfort. The kind that fills both your stomach and your heart. From their flavorful pork ribs and crispy panini to that comforting unlimited soup, every detail feels thoughtfully made.
So if you’re looking for your next chill café spot in Maginhawa, make sure to add this one to your list. Whether you’re after good food, a relaxing vibe, or just a new place to discover with friends, Hot Off The Press delivers that experience effortlessly.
Because sometimes, the best finds aren’t loud or flashy — they’re warm, welcoming, and simply Hot Off The Press.
Kung trip n’yong pagsamahin ang history + lakad + tipid goals, then this one’s for you. Did you know that Intramuros is now offering FREE walking tours every weekend? Yes, legit! Hindi na kailangan ng malaking budget para maka-experience ng guided tour sa “Walled City” of Manila.
🏰 Ano ang meron?
Every Saturday and Sunday, the Intramuros Administration hosts guided tours at two iconic spots:
✨ Fort Santiago – about 1 hour na kwento at lakad
✨ Casa Manila – around 30 minutes na throwback to Spanish colonial lifestyle
Schedules are at 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Pero here’s the catch: only 25 slots per batch, at walk-in lang. So, kung gusto mo makasama, agahan mo talaga.
👉 Entrance fees pa rin apply: ₱75 regular, ₱50 for students, PWDs, at seniors. Super sulit na, promise.
🌟 Bakit worth it?
Kasi hindi lang ito basta lakad-lakad. Here’s why you can't miss this:
Kwento over facts. Hindi lang “stone wall built in blah blah year.” The guides bring history to life—parang nagti-time travel ka.
Dalawa ang vibe. Fort Santiago = stronghold feels, old Manila drama. Casa Manila = chika about Spanish-era homes, furniture, daily life.
Intimate setting. 25 slots lang, so hindi siya parang field trip na sabay-sabay lahat. You can ask questions, maki-engage.
Perfect base for more lakwatsa. After the tour, you’re free to explore pa: Manila Cathedral, San Agustin Church, Museo de Intramuros.
💡 Pro Tips
Para mas enjoy ang experience, eto ang mga hacks ko for you:
Be early. Kung 9 AM ang target mo, nasa Fort Santiago ka na by 8:30.
OOTD check. Wear comfy shoes, bring payong/hat, at sunscreen. Manila sun is no joke. And baka umulan din, so better na handa.
Respect the place. Remember, heritage site ito. Be mindful, lalo na sa Casa Manila.
Tip if kaya. Free yung tour, pero small thank-you goes a long way for our hardworking guides.
Extend the experience. After the tour, chill ka muna sa plaza, mag-coffee, or mag-carriage ride (kalesa feels), pwede din ang bambike.
🗓️ Sample Weekend Flow
8:30 AM – Arrive at Fort Santiago
9:00 – 10:00 AM – Fort Santiago guided tour
10:30 – 11:00 AM – Casa Manila tour (kung morning batch ka)
Lunch – Try restos around Intramuros (meron diyan mga local eats at cafes)
Afternoon – Explore Manila Cathedral, San Agustin Church, Museo de Intramuros
4:00 PM – Kung hindi ka naka-Casa Manila sa umaga, join ka sa hapon
💬 Takeaway
Alam mo yung feeling na nakikinig ka ng kwento from your lolo/lola about “noong panahon”? Ganun yung vibe dito—except may visuals ka pa ng mismong lugar. 🥹
Walking through the walls of Intramuros reminds me na kahit gaano karaming beses pa itong masira or baguhin, it always finds a way to stand tall again. Kaya kung naghahanap ka ng lakad na educational, mura, at puno ng feels—this free walking tour is so, so JLofied-approved.
When you think of Santorini, you imagine whitewashed walls, calming blues, and sweeping ocean views. But who says you need to hop on a plane to Greece to enjoy that vibe? Our recent stay at Hotel Ava – Cuneta gave us just that: a Santorini-inspired escape in the heart of Pasay City.
Located along Cuneta Avenue, just minutes away from SM Mall of Asia, Baclaran, and EDSA Extension, Hotel Ava is more than just a convenient stopover. It’s a place where you can indulge in themed suites, modern comforts, and a touch of playful luxury. For our overnight stay, we chose the Thera Suite, and it gave us the perfect balance of fun and relaxation.
First Impressions
The check-in process was seamless and discreet. Once our booking was confirmed, a staff member guided us directly to our suite. I loved how private everything felt—no need to pass through long hallways or busy lobbies. The moment we opened the door, I was greeted by interiors that instantly transported me to the dreamy island of Santorini. Whitewashed walls paired with calming shades of blue created that authentic seaside vibe, making me forget I was still in the middle of Manila’s hustle.
My Favorite Features
Hotel Ava’s Thera Suite is filled with thoughtful details, but here are the highlights that made our stay unforgettable:
The Stairs 🪜
Yes, there are stairs inside the room! It may sound simple, but it added such a unique character to the space. For me, it became a little runway where every step felt like a moment worth capturing for Instagram.
The Videoke System 🎤
As someone who proudly calls herself a “videoke queen,” this was the ultimate highlight. The Platinum Karaoke System is ready with hundreds of hits, but we opted for YouTube since it has countless versions of our favorite songs. The microphone and sound system were surprisingly good—clear, crisp, and perfect for belting out tunes late into the night.
The Lavatory 🚿
Even the lavatory impressed me. Stylish, modern, and surprisingly IG-worthy, the bathroom made freshening up feel a little more luxurious. It’s clear that the design was well thought out, balancing comfort and aesthetics.
Interior Design 💙🤍
The entire suite had a carefully curated look, making it feel like Santorini without the long flight. The blue-and-white palette, chic furnishings, and Instagram-worthy corners made every angle photo-friendly.
Unlimited YouTube and Netflix 📺🍿
Hotel Ava provides its own Netflix account—such a thoughtful perk since it saves you from the hassle of logging into your personal account. Pair that with unlimited YouTube access, and you’ve got endless entertainment at your fingertips. Perfect for lazy afternoons or winding down after a videoke session.
Food Selections & In-Room Service
One of the things I appreciated was the in-room dining service. Ordering food was easy, and everything was served discreetly—another example of the hotel’s commitment to privacy and convenience.
The menu had a good variety of options, from comfort food classics to shareable dishes perfect for a night in. We ordered a mix of Filipino favorites and light bites, and everything arrived warm, neatly plated, and tasty. Whether you’re craving rice meals, noodles, or something quick to snack on between videoke sessions, the selection was satisfying. Drinks and desserts were also available, which made it easy to just stay in the suite and enjoy without having to step out.
There’s something so indulgent about lounging in your Santorini-inspired suite, snacking on good food, then slipping into the jacuzzi afterwards. That’s the kind of experience Hotel Ava delivers—everything you need is just a call away.
More to Discover
While the Thera Suite was our chosen escape, Hotel Ava – Cuneta also offers other themed party rooms. Each room has its own personality, making it fun to return and try a different experience next time. Whether you’re looking for a cozy setup, a space for celebration, or another themed destination vibe, there’s a room waiting to match your mood.
Final Thoughts
Our stay at the Thera Suite in Hotel Ava – Cuneta was exactly what I needed: a quick getaway that blended relaxation, fun, and style. From singing our hearts out in the videoke corner to binging Netflix, enjoying in-room dining, and soaking in the jacuzzi, it was a staycation that ticked all the boxes.
Hotel Ava proves that you don’t have to travel far to experience something unique. Santorini may be miles away, but in Pasay, you can enjoy a slice of that dream—no passport required.

Today, I laced up my sneakers again to start practicing for our upcoming Company Sportsfest. It’s my second time joining the walkathon relay, and I thought, “This should be easy—I walk all the time!” After all, I’ve always been the type to choose walking over waiting. Whether it’s from Buendia MRT station to Makati Avenue—roughly 1.2 to 1.4 kilometers each way—or simply deciding to stroll instead of calling a Grab driver, walking has always been my go-to.
But today felt different.
The determination was there, my mind was fully willing, but my body had other plans. My legs didn’t respond the way they used to, and my breathing seemed a little heavier than I remembered. Suddenly, I was face-to-face with the truth: getting older changes the way we move, recover, and endure.
It’s a humbling realization.
There was a time when I could brisk walk without thinking twice, when energy felt limitless, and recovery was just a matter of a good night’s sleep. Now, I find myself listening to my body more carefully—learning when to push and when to pause. It’s not about admitting defeat, but about embracing the reality that while age brings limitations, it also brings wisdom.
And here’s the irony: though the body slows down, the heart and mind remain young. I still have the same excitement, the same competitive spirit, and the same love for the little victories. What changes is the pace—and maybe, that’s not a bad thing.
Walking has always been a metaphor for life. Sometimes, you’re full of energy, taking long strides without hesitation. Other times, you slow down, not because you want to, but because your body demands it. Yet, no matter the pace, what matters most is that you keep moving forward.
So yes, I may not have the same stamina I had years ago. But I am still here, still willing, still showing up for the walk. And maybe that’s the real victory—not how fast or how strong, but how consistent and determined we remain despite the changes that come with time.
Because at the end of the day, getting old is not about losing—it’s about gaining a new perspective. It’s about realizing that strength isn’t only measured in speed or endurance, but also in resilience, in humility, and in the courage to continue walking—one step at a time.
