Picturing Marawi at SM Supermalls

Revisit the tragic backstory of the Maranaos at SM's Picturing Marawi Photo Exhibit featuring the heart-tugging photos of the Marawi siege aftermath immortalized by former journalist Mylah Reyes Roque from June 3 to August 31 in select SM Malls.

"The exhibit memorializes the tragedy in Marawi with the aim to engage mallgoers and help them have a greater understanding of the conflict," said Jonjon San Agustin, SM Supermalls Senior Vice President for Marketing.

Picturing Marawi narrates the aftermath of human conflict through images of buildings, homes, and mosques that are deserted by the war but nevertheless speak of the community that used to make it alive. These are stories of  a siege fought in close  quarters.

Catch the photo exhibit in the following SM malls : Megamall (June 4 to June 11), Southmall (June 24 to 29), Sucat (July 22 to 28), Rosario (August 5 to 11), and Telabastagan (August 25 to 31). This endeavour is in partnership with National Museum.

The Marawi siege was an armed conflict that took place in Marawi, Lanao del Sur - a city filled with pulsating energy that was silenced by war. The battle started on the 23rd of May 2017 and lasted for five months - leaving the city in ruins and ending the lives of many Filipinos.

Atag Ng Pakil Para sa Laguna De Bay : A Multi-Sectoral Pakil River Tributary Clean Up Kicks-Of on April 14

The Manila Bay's restoration, although in its initial stage, and the Boracay rehabilitation is definitely a great success.  The project inspires eco-volunteers, government agencies, LGUs, NGOs to do the same for their own cities and provinces. 

This time, let's talk about Laguna de Bay.

Laguna de Bay is the largest lake in the Philippines and third largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia.  It is located between the provinces of Laguna to the south and Rizal to the North.  The lake is blessed with rich natural resources and plays an important source for fishing and for irrigation.

Save Laguna de Bay

Pollution, Squatting, and industries are major factors that accelerate the death of Laguna de Bay.   Informal settlers and the illegal structures of businesses can be found all over Laguna de Bay which contributes to the pollution from untreated sewage and industrial waste.

Today, February 14, Pag-IBIG Fund holds its eight "I Do. I Do! Araw ng Pag-IBIG," a mass wedding for Pag-IBIG member-couples.  More than 1,500 couples are expected to participate this year in 13 venues nationwide.

"This is how we celebrate Araw ng Pag-IBIG on Valentine's Day.  The mass wedding is our way of helping couples formalize their union and reminding them that Pag-IBIG Fund membership comes with benefits that can help in their lives.  We are one with President Rodrigo Roa Duterte's directive of helping  Filipino families make the most of social benefits provided by government institutions like Pag-IBIG Fund," said Eduardo D. del Rosario, who serves as the Chairperson of both the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) and the Pag-IBIG Fund of Board of Trustees.

This year's " I Do. I Do! Araw ng Pag-IBIG" will be simultaneously conducted in Pasay City, Mandaue City, Davao City, General Santos City and Zamboanga City.

Araw ng Pag-IBIG," was awarded with the 1st Philippine Quill for a Government Communication Program in 2013.  It also grabbed the Bronze Award for Advocacy Communications under the category of Responsible Parenthood at the Araw Values Award, and cited by the TV show, Philippine Book of Records, as having the "most number of couples in a nationwide mass wedding'" in  2014.

DAY6 in Manila : You are Worth The Wait!

South Korean K-Pop Band DAY6 serenade Philippine fans in a sold-out concert on Saturday,  06 October at Kia Theater. 

The five-member band composed of Park Sungjin (lead vocalist), Park Jaehyung (guitar), Kang Younghyun (bass), Kim Wonpil (keyboard), Yoon Dowoon (drums), melt the hearts of their My Day Ph fans and promised them that they will be back soon.

More than 20 songs were performed including their recently released single "Shot Me," "You Were Beautiful and Congratulations" made the concert an unforgettable night for the fans.
  

Their 1st World Tour "Youth" kicked-off in Seoul and will end in Jakarta for 2018. Additional concerts for 2019 were already released.

I went to the concert with my teens. I personally witnessed how their fans went crazy over this K-Pop band. I actually don't know that much about them, but I am quite familiar with their music. My personal favorites are  Letting Go and Shoot Me.

Yung feeling ng pagiging nanay and event organizer mode ko ay nag activate during the concert.  Yung tipong tinabihan at binakuran  ko nga mga event security and organizers to check on security protocols, paano ang flow sa pila, etc. I also assisted sa pag arrange ng pila para walang siksikan. 

Masunurin naman ang mga bata. Organized ang mga fandom, clean fun lang, walang gulo. But you need to  prepare your eardrum, grabe sila sa tilian.

Pasig River Master Plan Completed

The PRRC, in collaboration with UP PLANADES, designed the Pasig River Integrated and Strategic Master Plan (PRISM) with a vision that by 2032, the Pasig River and its surrounding basins are resilient life-sustaining ecosystems that are able to support diverse human needs and biodiversity towards inclusive, harmonized, and balanced development co-managed by competent and adaptive institutions with responsible and empowered communities.

This new restoration strategy covers water quality management, stream flow management, catchment management and riparian management so that the Pasig River will again enshrine socioeconomic, aesthetic, environmental, recreational and cultural values amid changing risks and natural perturbations.
The illustration below provides a brief summary of the integrated wastewater treatment systems, one of the 19 priority projects proposed in the PRISM to help improve the water quality of the Pasig River, and for concerned agencies to comply with concession agreement, and other environmental laws.

Philippines' Pasig River Vies for Asia River Prize Award; Competes with China's Yangtze River

The Philippines' Pasig River, the cradle of early Manila civilization, has been selected as a finalist in the first-ever Asia Riverprize by the prestigious International RiverFoundation (IRF) which recognizes and rewards organizations who are making a difference through effective river basin restoration and management programs.

It is a back-to-back nomination for the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) who just came from a successful campaign in the 2017 Thiess International Riverprize competition where the Pasig River was hailed as runner-up to the winner, San Antonio River of Texas, USA. PRRC Executive Director Jose Antonio E. Goitia says that “the consecutive entries of the Pasig River as a finalist in the 2017 and 2018 Thiess International and Asia Riverprize, respectively, is a testament that the world recognizes the efforts of the Philippine government to restore the Pasig River and its environs since PRRC was established in 1999.” Initially, the competition was called the Asia-Pacific Riverprize Awards which was opened to entrants from New Zealand, Australia, and 45 other countries. However, according to the IRF, due the to the high number and quality of entries received, they have made the decision to split the promoted Asia-Pacific Riverprize into two: Asia Riverprize and another category for the Australasia Riverprize. After a series of tedious deliberations, the IRF has announced and congratulates the organizations chosen as Asia Riverprize finalists with the highest honors in river restoration and protection namely: the Pasig River (Philippines) and the Yangtze River (China). Goitia adds “last year, the Philippines is the only third world and developing country that made it into the international finals and bravely competed with the US and the United Kingdom. In this year’s Asia Riverprize, we will be facing another super power – the red dragon, China. However, with an indomitable spirit, we remain steadfast and optimistic that we will stand triumphant in the end.” In behalf of the IRF’s board of river basin experts, IRF Director Professor Bill Dennison says that “these different river stories are united by a common theme: excellence in river management.”

The Riverprize is not a competition of which river is more beautiful or cleaner. This is the reason why the IRF, comprised of river management experts and professionals from around the world, has given importance and consideration to the rehabilitation efforts of the PRRC to bring back the Pasig River system to life. It has acknowledged PRRC’s commitment in delivering quality projects, programs, and activities in easement recovery, housing and resettlement, riverbanks development, waste and water quality management, and public awareness. Compared to the 1990s when it was declared "biologically dead," the Pasig River's condition now has significantly improved. Although the Pasig River development is a work in progress, many areas along the historic river have already shown signs of aquatic life and it has already become conducive for transport, recreation, and tourism. PRRC’s Executive Director Jose Antonio E. Goitia, together with Public Information, Advocacy and Tourism Division Head George Oliver G. De La Rama, will be presenting and defending the Philippines’ Pasig River entry to a panel of esteemed judges in the upcoming 21st International Riversymposium on October 14 to 18, 2018 in Sydney, Australia. Members of PRRC’s Management Committee will also form part of the Philippine delegation. The winner of the 2018 Asia Riverprize will receive widespread global recognition which can build new partnerships, provide opportunities for exchange of knowledge and best practices, and open doors for international support. Furthermore, the winner will automatically qualify for Stage Two of the Thiess International Riverprize in 2019. As one nation, the PRRC seeks everyone’s support to its Pasig River entry in the 2018 Asia Riverprize. The Pasig River's victory is the victory of the Philippines and every Filipino who works hard and shares the same vision of saving our waterways and the environment. It will be the triumph of all who believe that the dream of a clean and alive Pasig River is within reach!

Ang Huling El Bimbo : Pagbabalik Tanaw sa Nakaraan

"Gusto mo ba?......Gusto mo ba?...... Gusto mo bang......sumama?"

Pagkatapos manuod ng Huling El Bimbo, umuwi akong nag-iisip.  

Iniisip ko nung mga panahong nasa kolehiyo ako.  Kamusta na kaya ang mga kaklase ko?  Kamusta na din kaya yung palagi naming tinatambayan tuwing lunch time? Nagbebenta pa din kaya sila ng estopado?  Isa ito sa mga paboritio naming ulam nuon.  Kamusta na din yung computer shop na lagi din naming tinatambayan nuon? Dami kong naubos na pera kaka-rent duon.

Kamusta na kaya yung mga manliligaw ko?  Kamusta na din pala ang mga crush ko nuon?  Tumaba na din kaya sila?  

At isa isa kong binalikan ang mga ala-ala.

Ang mag joy ride sa Antipolo at mga inuman sa Tia Marias sa Greenhills kahit walang pera.  Memorable eto kasi first time kong malasing.  I was only 16 years old.  My gash, bawal pero nakainum padin ako at nalasing.  Buti walang nangyari, hindi katulad ni ..........<spoiler alert>

Minsan isang panahong nag-concert sila sa university, isa ako sa mga organizers kaya hanggang ngayon naalala ko ang mga pag-papatawa ni Paco Arespacochaga sa back stage.

Bigla ko ding naalala yung kaklase kong nagintroduce sakin sa musika ng Eraser Heads. Tinanong ko sya bakit ganyan ang lyrics, may pagmumura pa?

Kamusta na din pag-rarally namin sa harapan ng Pop-eye.  Ano nga ba ang ipinaglalaban ko nuon?  Karapatang pang-tao?  Pagbaba ng tuition fee?  Ano nga ba?

Kamusta naman din ang mga sandamakmak na org na sinalihan ko?  May mga sikat na ba sa kanila?  May mangilan ngilan napapanuod ko sa entablado.  Meron ding sikat na napanuod ko minsan sa Ms. Saigon.  Meron ding may mga sumikat na na album.  Masaya ako para sa kanila.

An Amazing Evening with Collabro

COLLABRO - The UK-based musical theater group recently held their concert for the leg of their Asian tour last February 26 held at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Pasay City. Composed of Jamie Lambert, Michael Auger, Matt Pagan and Thomas Redgrave, they took the stage of “Britain’s Got Talent” for an audition and eventually won the competition in 2014.

When I found out that they were here in the Philippines for a concert, I was looking forward to watch them live. I’ve seen their audition videos on Youtube three years ago and fell in love with them ever since.

The show started a bit late because the traffic in Manila caused problems to the people to get to the show on time. The organizers then decided to push the show back to accommodate the “late comers”.

The concert started with the Singing Sensations,  Resorts World Manila’s very own “Dream Girls” as the front act. Composed of Charlotte, Jasmine, and Cris, this sultry and talented female group rock the stage with their hot performance. I must say that these girls are talented and their world-class performance is impressive.

Now here comes the most awaited part of the show.

Collabro started their performance with “This is the Moment” from the musical “Jekyll & Hyde”. It was then followed by Disney classics and some famous songs from famous Broadway Musicals that we love like “Les Miserables” and “Phantom of the Opera”.

Their repertoire also includes Beauty and the Beast, Send in the Clown, Journey to the Past, Empty Chairs and tables, Bring Me Home,  I dreamed a dream, Music of the Night, Frank Sinatra Classics, Come What May, Defying Gravity, Stars and their first original song Light House.

I got goosebumps with their empowering rendition of Music of the Night. I started to recall scenes from the Phantom of the Opera when we watched the musical back in 2012 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Too bad, my husband was not able to join me in the concert, if he was with me, I am sure he will be delighted. He is a real fan.

I am also super in love with their cover of “Bring Me Home”. With just the first line of the song brought back that Jean Valjean's death scene with Fantine and Éponine.

Whenever I think of Collabro, I think of Broadway. The group is also a huge fan of Les Miserables, that is why a song from that famous musical was always included in their album.

But you don’t need to like Broadway musicals for you to love Collabro. Aside from being good looking, seeing them performing on stage will make your heart flutter. Their heavenly music offers a feast for the ears.

I also had the chance to be with them after the concert. The After Party which was held at El Calle Bar – Resorts World Manila gave me the opportunity to have a photo op and dinner with them. It was an amazing evening indeed!

Celebrate 2017 National Music Week with the NAMCYA

The National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) National Finals Week coincides with the National Music Week celebrations on the last week of November.

To be held on November 21-26, 2017, the Cultural Center of the Philippines shall welcome young artists, musicians, trainors, and teachers who have reached the finals level in a nationwide competition that started early this year. Six ensembles presenting their region’s local traditions will also be presented in the Traditional Music Concert.

With generous support from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the week-long events will include competitions, outreach performances, and culminating and awarding concerts for solo instrument winners and group winners. Newly-Commissioned Works by Filipino composers will also be premiered during the Final Competitions.

All-Filipino cast performs on the RWM stage for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Resorts World Manila in cooperation with Ultimate Shows Inc., opened its latest theater production Ian Fleming's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for the first time in the country, at the award-winning Newport Performing Arts Theater (NPAT).

Thirty-four years after its movie version was released in 1968, the English musical was the first staged at the London Palladium in 2002 and became its longest running show ever with a three and a half year run. A UK tour also run from 2005 until 2008.

Prior to the Manila production, the musical was also staged on Broadway, New York; the Capitol Theater Sydney; the State Theater, Munich; and Singapore's Esplanade, among others.

Known to deliver world-class productions that champion Filipino talent, RWM showcases another all-Filipino cast led by stage actor Gian Magdangal who comes back to the country after three years of performing theater roles in Hong Kong Disney's the Gold Mickey and Minnie and the Wondrous Book, and as one of the main performers for Universal Studios in Osaka, Japan.

Gian takes on the role of eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts, while young yet seasoned actress Yannah Laurel plays his love interest Truly Scrumptious.

"I was very excited when I got the part. I'm really a fan of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and it was a big part of my childhood," shared Laurel. "It will appeal to Filipino audiences because it's a spectacle of a show, the music is beautiful, and for those who are unfamiliar, it's going to be an exciting treat for them because every single number is a producton number," added the two-time Aliw Awards Best Actress in a Musical nominee.

For the roles of the Potts children, 12-year old Noel Comia, a two-time Aliw Awardee for Best Child Performer alternates with 11-year old Albert Silos who has also been cast in several stage productions in the past including RWM's the King and the Cinderella.

Isabeli Araneta-Elizalde also returns to the NPAT stage as Jemina Potts, after her breakthrough performance in RWMs Annie which won her the Discovery of the Year award in last year's Aliw Awards. Alternating with Isabeli is Zoey Alvarade who herself has performed in numerous stage productions including It's a Giant World, Jewel of Antilles:Two Worlds, One Island; Seussical Jr; Wizzard of Oz, and Greased Lightning.

Also cast in the production are Mako Alonso as Boris; Reb Atadero as Goran; James Paollei as Grandpa Potts; Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo as the Baroness; Raymund Concepcion as Baron Bomburst; Michael Williams as the Toymaker; and Lorenz Martinez as the Childcatcher.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is directed by Jaime Del Mundo, with assistant direction by Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, artistic direction by Michael Williams, and the musical score provided by the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Rodel Colmenar.
